I’m a Geordie one-woman band.
I was a creative copywriter in ad
agencies for 26 years before striking
out alone. I’m called Mam’s the Word
because I’m a great writer and also
a mammy.

After leaving Newcastle College of Art & Design at 21, I progressed my way up the ranks from junior to head of copy. I spent the first 15 years of my career in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Sometimes I eat haggis and pretend I’m Scottish.

I’ve written for a diverse range of sectors in my time – from cars and sandwiches to windows and football.

I can say ‘everything’ in under 10 words or write a 32-page brochure with my eyes closed. I’m a fantastic storyteller – I can grab people by the eyeballs and stop them in their tracks – creatively, conceptually, convincingly – I can write. With just a few words I can reduce someone to tears or make them LOL.

As a tone of voice specialist, I can write in a variety of styles and can turn my hand to any medium. I’m also shit hot at grammar, punctuation and spelling and with years of proofreading behind me, I pride myself on my meticulous attention to detail.

Things I'm proud of

  • In my spare time, I’m co-leader of an initiative called Ladies, Wine and Design Newcastle – we support and mentor hundreds of creative women in the North East, especially graduates and those starting out.
  • I’m a parent governor and believe in championing ‘words’. I’m naturally big on grammar, spelling, literacy, reading and the arts – I want to be able to shape the clever minds of tomorrow and help little humans excel in these subjects.

Things I love

Hunting for ‘treasure’ – my favourite thing to do is scour junk shops and car booters for vintage ER china and glassware. My husband describes me as a ‘collector of everything’. I’m a lover of the late Queen, and the King himself, Mr Elvis Presley.
